The New Zealand Tall Blacks basketball team recorded a rare win over rivals Australia in Brisbane (20th of February 2020). Head Coach Pero Cameron made his debut and many familiar Tall Blacks were missing. It was played in Nathan Brisbane which happens to be close by so I took the opportunity to be there and support the occasion.
The Tall Blacks game plan was impressive. They seemed intent on pushing the ball, getting to the basket, or kicking the ball out for open threes. They really appear to have embraced modern small ball. This style of play can be sustainable with the type of talent NZ tends to produce.
The Australian Boomers were also without many of their stars. They were on NBL playoff or NBA duty. However, they have a much bigger talent pool than NZ and would have expected to win this game. NZ can take a lot of heart from the tough victory while the new coaching staff can be optimistic about the future.
